How to balance a celebration budget with future goals

Celebration and long-term planning can coexist. The useful question is not whether an owambe is ‘bad’, but whether one event is crowding out emergency savings, debt repayment or protection.

What to check

Set the total budget before vendors, separate gifts and family contributions from borrowed money and decide the minimum amount that must still go to future goals.

What could change the answer

A savings or insurance plan is not automatically a better use of money if its terms, charges or liquidity do not suit you. Avoid false return promises.

A practical next step

Create two transfers on payday—one for the celebration and one for the future—so neither goal depends on what happens to be left.
